blog_logoThe Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has approved $1.5 million in grants to strengthen nonprofits in the 23-county region. A group of diverse organizations applied for funding during this fall/winter through a variety of grant programs and other support opportunities to strengthen nonprofit operations and effectiveness. The following programs awarded grants and support:

  • Common Good Funds – $688,000 to 11 organizations
  • Atlanta AIDS Fund – $400,000 to 10 organizations
  • Morgan Fund – $30,000 to 11 organizations
  • Newton Fund – $17,877 to five organizations
  • Neighborhood Fund– $39,750 to five organizations (including coaching services)
  • Nonprofit Scholarships – $8,054 to 13 organizations
  • Organizational Partnerships – $389,000 to seven organizations

These grants, along with awards made during the first part of 2011, compose the $4.4 million in competitive grants distributed last year to nonprofits in the 23-county region. Funding for the Foundation’s grantmaking comes from a variety of sources including partnerships with funders like United Way, Kaiser Permanente and the Zeist Foundation, as well as from donors of The Community Foundation.

“Some Foundation donors chose to support critical issues by donating unrestricted dollars to the Common Good Funds, our largest grant program,” says Alicia Philipp, president of The Community Foundation. “An unrestricted fund is a great way for individuals to give back to the greater Atlanta community in general rather than supporting a particular organization or cause. For those looking to leave a permanent named legacy, an unrestricted fund is an effective way to support our community and its needs as they change over time.”

Preliminary results indicate fiscal activity for The Community Foundation in 2011 was solid. Last year, The Community Foundation and its donors distributed an estimated $73 million in grants and support to nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally. Donor contributed an estimated $71.8 million in gifts to existing funds and to establish new funds at the Foundation.

Nonprofits can now apply for funding through various grant programs including the Common Good Funds, Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund and Grants to Green.
