South Georgia storm emergency

January 23, 2017
 /

A series of tornadoes has ripped through south Georgia, and Governor Nathan Deal has declared a state of emergency in seven counties in the southern central part of the state. At least 15 people were killed by these rare January tornadoes, with many more displaced or without power. Search and rescue efforts are underway as the community works to cope with this disaster. It will be some time before the full extent of the damage is determined, but it is already apparent that an astounding number of homes and businesses have been destroyed and rebuilding will be a long and hard journey.

Our thoughts are with our neighbors to the south who are shaken and scared facing the aftermath of this tragic storm. You can help by donating to a nonprofit offering assistance to those affected. The Community Foundation of South Georgia recommends the following nonprofits:

Adel/Cook County Area

First Baptist Church of Adel

American Red Cross of South Georgia

Second Harvest of South Georgia

Albany/Dougherty County Area

Porterfield United Methodist Church

United Way of Southwest Georgia

American Red Cross of Southwest Georgia

Second Harvest of South Georgia
