J. OLEN EARL, J.D., CFP serves as the director of Gift Planning and is responsible for the development and implementation of The Community Foundation’s comprehensive gift planning program. He acts as liaison to donors’ professional advisors (attorneys, accountants and financial advisors) and designs planned and major gifts to The Community Foundation. Olen helps donors to efficiently utilize their assets for the benefit of the philanthropic causes that are important to them.
 
Olen joined The Community Foundation in July of 2001. Prior to that, he worked as a tax attorney for two large international law firms and later was the Director of Planning and a financial advisor with a boutique estate and financial planning firm that services high net worth and high income executives and business owners. As a professional advisor, Olen designed sophisticated estate and financial plans for high net worth individuals, often utilizing charitable estate planning solutions to reduce or eliminate estate and capital gains tax exposure. He also developed and taught two in-house training and development programs on the fundamentals of estate and financial planning and advanced topics in estate and financial planning, including the use of charitable planning tools.
 
Olen has completed the Family Wealth Counselors of America’sProfessional Mentoring Programa 125-classroom hour, advanced education program dedicated to training professional financial advisors to successfully integrate the charitable components of planning into the traditional estate planning process. He is a CFP and a graduate of Oglethorpe University’sCertified Financial Planner Program. Olen graduated, with distinction, from Emory University School of Law in May of 1992 and from the University of Virginia in May of 1989. Olen is also a member of the boards of the Georgia Planned Giving Council and the Estate Planning and Probate Section of the Atlanta Bar Association (Chair-Elect).

During 2008 The Community Foundation dedicated time to learn new ways we can strengthen the Atlanta region through philanthropy. We studied practices in the field, attended conferences, read research from experts and peers, and listened to our donors, nonprofits and community leaders. From this we have created Our Philanthropic Framework.


This is not a reinvention of The Community Foundation - it is simply our intent to clearly define how we do our work and how we'll know if we're making a difference.
