ROBERT D. SMULIAN serves as vice president of Philanthropic Services for The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta overseeing the development of the Philanthropic Services Department including a focus on donor services, professional advisor outreach and planned giving programs.

Rob came to The Community Foundation after serving as executive director of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, the region’s oldest nonprofit, multi-disciplinary contemporary arts center. During his tenure at the Contemporary, Rob led successful efforts to erase a $250,000 deficit, balance its budget and more than triple membership. Perhaps most importantly, the center pulled out of an artistic slump with livelier and more accessible exhibitions.

Rob has an extensive background in nonprofit management, fundraising and business.  His nonprofit experience includes tenures at the Smithsonian Institution and The Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., and COMPAS (Community Programs in the Arts and Sciences) in St. Paul, Minnesota. Prior to joining the Contemporary, he was Vice President for Planning & Administration at The Georgia Conservancy, and was also in the private sector for 10 years as a manufacturing executive. He has owned a commercial art gallery in Washington, D.C. and was a fundraising consultant for nonprofit environmental and education clients in Washington as well. Rob has an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BA magna cum laude from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Rob has served on numerous nonprofit boards in the Atlanta area, including several in leadership roles.

Rob lives with his wife, Lynne Borsuk, and their son, Jacob, in Decatur, Georgia.
