Supporting Organizations

A supporting organization is a separate legal entity, with its own board, its own bylaws, etc. However, it enjoys the status of a public charity due to its close connection with The Community Foundation, a connection that is similar to a subsidiary of a corporation. The Community Foundation legally appoints a majority of the supporting organization’s board of directors. As such, it may be said that a supporting organization operates under The Community Foundation’s “umbrella.”

Through a supporting organization, donors receive the benefits and services of the Foundation while maintaining a separate board of directors that manages the supporting organization’s grantmaking, investments and other functions. A supporting organization (new or existing) may affiliate with The Community Foundation if it has at least $2 million in assets or pays a minimum annual fee of $10,000. Supporting organization policies, procedures, services and fees can be provided upon request.

Foundation measures metro Atlanta's philanthropy

At The Community Foundation, we are committed to promoting and supporting philanthropy in the metro Atlanta region.

In 2010 we commissioned an in-depth study to track the investment and engagement of residents in our 23-county region in four key areas: Community Involvement, Philanthropic Giving, Volunteerism, and Public Policy Involvement.

It is our intent to conduct this study every three years to see changes in how Atlantans are connected and engaged around in the four key areas.
