Impact Philanthropy

What is Impact Philanthropy?

Impact Philanthropy is a new approach we’re taking to further engage donors to meet the ever-changing needs of our community. Impact Philanthropy includes print, online and “Community Conversations” with nonprofits and donors – all with the focus of connecting donors with their passion and the needs of the community. Through Impact Philanthropy, we help define the issues and opportunities nonprofits and those they serve are facing.

Featured Issue: Arts & Culture

Today, arts organizations are facing unprecedented financial challenges as a result of the current economic crisis. Foundation giving, corporate sponsorships, government support and performance ticket income have plummeted at the same time. Cultural institutions of all kinds are at risk. Artists and visionary artistic leaders are unemployed. Opportunities for personal expressions are declining. Diverse communities are losing a forum to express cultural history and traditions. It is a critical time for arts and culture, an essential part of our Atlanta community.

Did you know...

  • Arts and culture strengthen our education system, provide young people a voice, foster community development, work with the underserved and support individuals as artists.
  • The Atlanta region has more than 200 midsized arts organizations (annual budgets less than $2 million). These organizations represent the full spectrum of cultural, economic and geographic diversity that reflect Atlanta's many different neighborhoods, customs and citizens.
  • Arts and culture are a significant industry in the City of Atlanta, one that generates $274.8 million in local economic activity.
  • Unlike many peer cities in the U.S., Atlanta (or Georgia) does not have any form of dedicated tax revenue that supports arts organizations or an arts district.
  • Georgia State Council for the Arts budget of $4.5 million in revenues is the 47th per capita in the United States.
  • Since 2005, donors of The Community Foundation have provided more than $14 million in grants to arts and culture nonprofits. While these contributions are substantial, we are still seeing a greater need in the region for support of the arts.

    Highlights

    Our Philanthropic Framework

During 2008 The Community Foundation dedicated time to learn new ways we can strengthen the Atlanta region through philanthropy. We studied practices in the field, attended conferences, read research from experts and peers, and listened to our donors, nonprofits and community leaders. From this we have created Our Philanthropic Framework.

This is not a reinvention of The Community Foundation - it is simply our intent to clearly define how we do our work and how we'll know if we're making a difference.
