Earthquake Tragedy in Haiti: January 15, 2010

The recent tragedy in Haiti has left us all deeply saddened. As you may know, on Tuesday, January 12, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince causing massive destruction. Officials fear thousands – perhaps more than 100,000 – have perished, and some 3 million people are believed to be in need of assistance at this time, ranging from shelter to food and clean water; many will likely need relief for a year or more. The International Red Cross and other aid groups have announced plans for major relief operations in the western hemisphere's poorest country, although it will still take several days for a clear picture of the damage to emerge.

The philanthropic community has responded swiftly in addressing the immediate rescue and relief aspects of this disaster. Visit the Council on Foundation’s disaster grantmaking website at http://www.cof.org/disasterresponse for current information. Here at The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, donors have already recommended grants totaling $33,150 to organizations responding in Haiti.

For donors or community partners interested in supporting relief efforts, we’ve listed several key organizations working on the ground to provide relief. We’ve also listed opportunities to support current fundraising efforts for our next generation donors or those looking to make smaller contributions. Donors who would like to make a gift from their fund, please contact your philanthropic advisor, Audrey, Rob, Erin or Barrett, at 404-688-5525.
