Knollwood Elementary School in the Belvedere community of DeKalb County is one of 18 schools in the DeKalb County School System assessing the effectiveness of their physical education (PE) curriculum. With permission from parents, Knollwood will monitor students’ heart rates during PE class using heart rate monitors. This data will help the school best determine the appropriate quantity and quality of physical education and recess for students. The goal, according to Shannon Williams, assistant director of Health & Wellness for DeKalb County Schools, is to get students as active as possible during the short time they have physical education.
