Planet Philanthropy 2009
Customized sessions this year help further engage the next generation
On August 22 and August 29, The Community Foundation held two sessions of our annual Planet Philanthropy event for children and grandchildren of donors. [Click HERE for photos from this exciting event!] The first session, for youth ages 9-12 years old, was held at Trees Atlanta. During the day, youth had the opportunity to learn about water conservation from Tress Atlanta staff, as well as how to evaluate organizations for grantmaking. A highlight of each Planet Philanthropy session is the group grantmaking exercise.
After listening to presentations from the Center for the Visually Impaired, Imagine It! The Children's Museum Atlanta, Inc., Ron Clark Academy and Kate’s Club, the group selected Kate’s Club to receive a $5,000 grant to support its Holiday HUGS program. Each year, participants are also able to make individual grants of $250 to an organization of their choice. The day ended with a community service project where youth and parents rolled up their sleeves to help mulch trees and shrubs around the Trees Atlanta site.
The second session on August 29 was held at Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta for youth ages 6-8 year olds. The day kicked off with an exercise that allowed children to make paper hand coupons to help out their family, friends and neighbors with chores and daily activities. Youth also had a fun time creating an eight foot high mural of a community where they added people, places and other elements they thought were important to have in their community.
After presentations from Zoo Atlanta, Jumpstart, Our House and Park Pride, the group awarded their $5,000 grant to Our House for the purchase of instructional materials and classroom supplies. The group also made individual grants to organizations of their choice. At the end of the session, participants and their families were invited to learn and explore in the hand-on, interactive museum.
