Introducing Higher Ground

The goodness of man and the generosity of spirit is a common thread within us all.

Introducing Higher Ground, a group working to create positive change throughout the greater Atlanta region.

In 2010 The Community Foundation brought together four long-term Atlanta faith leaders – the Rev. Joanna Adams (pastor emerita of Morningside Presbyterian Church), Imam Plemon El-Amin (imam emeritus of the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam), the Rev. Joseph Roberts (pastor emeritus of Ebenezer Baptist Church) and Rabbi Alvin Sugarman (senior rabbi emeritus of The Temple). Why? Because while they have different faiths – and have each made an indelible mark on Atlanta’s history, these faith leaders share a common desire for a better community. Branded Higher Ground, the group will ultimately ignite a wider conversation leading to action that creates positive change.

Last year, the group took to the web via a blog, www.highergroundgroup.org/blog, in which one of the faith leaders writes a post weekly with select. Already subscribers have shared commentary that is rich with insights into how Atlantans’ heads and hearts are thinking and feeling. Now it is your turn...

“There is a need for a different outlook on today’s harsh realities,” said Alicia Philipp, president of The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. Always earnest and honest, at times even raw, these four faith leaders understand that we can work together despite our differences to create a stronger community. Faith-based but not faith-biased, the Higher Ground Group examines the issues and challenges of today daring to ask, “In a city fortunate to have a rich history of moral leadership, what kind of moral leadership is needed now and in the future?”

Foundation measures metro Atlanta's philanthropy

At The Community Foundation, we are committed to promoting and supporting philanthropy in the metro Atlanta region.

In 2010 we commissioned an in-depth study to track the investment and engagement of residents in our 23-county region in four key areas: Community Involvement, Philanthropic Giving, Volunteerism, and Public Policy Involvement.

It is our intent to conduct this study every three years to see changes in how Atlantans are connected and engaged around in the four key areas.
