What We Believe
With a history so rich and vibrant, how do we keep focused on the future? Simple. We hold to a vision. We envision the Community Foundation becoming the most trusted resource for growing philanthropy to improve communities throughout the Atlanta region.
And we do it by holding to eight key values that guide and sustain us, no matter what. At the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, we strengthen communities and empower individuals. We nurture leadership because we value learning. We partner strategically, always driving diversity and inclusion. Most of all, we live with passion and give with purpose.
If this purpose strikes a chord for you, let’s get together. Maybe it’s through the gift of time, the sharing of talent, the discourse of stimulating dialogue or the contribution of a treasure. You can be a vital part of helping the Community Foundation achieve this vision. Let’s get started.
Since we first opened our doors in 1951, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has made it our mission to connect the passions of donors with the nonprofits fulfilling that purpose. We keep our finger on the pulse of the issues and organizations that make a difference in our region. We’ve developed expertise not only in philanthropy, but also in strengthening the region’s nonprofits and in identifying opportunities to inspire positive change throughout the metro Atlanta region.
Of the nearly 750 grantmaking community foundations across the country, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta is one of the nation’s top 20 by asset size. We’re also accredited by the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations, have a four-star rating from Charity Navigator and continue to receive national recognition for our financial health, accountability and transparency.
Above all else, the Community Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life right here in the 23-county Atlanta metro area. And nothing brings us more joy—or reason to celebrate—than that.
Our 23-County region of impact: Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Morgan, Newton, Paulding, Pickens, Rockdale, Spalding, Walton. Visualize it
You could say we were born of banks. In 1951, our city’s (then) four largest financial institutions created the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. That year, the Community Foundation offered its first grants to local nonprofits. The total? $450,000.
Today, the Community Foundation donates an estimated $100 million annually, making us one of the largest philanthropic service organizations in the Southeast. We’ve grown a lot since we first took root some 65 years ago. But one thing hasn’t changed: Our passion for connecting people to the issues and organizations making a real difference in our region. Take a look at where we’ve been…and where we’re going.

The People With the Passion
Our Board of Directors does more than govern the Community Foundation; they empower. These volunteers provide stewardship for both the Foundation and our charitable activities by establishing policy, setting priorities and making final grant decisions. These passionate civic leaders provide the expertise and guidance that drive the success of the Foundation—now, and for years to come.
These are the warriors. The pounders of streets. The crunchers of numbers. The conveners of civil discourse. The changers of lives. Made up of a diverse group of individuals, the staff is the Foundation’s greatest asset—and bring their own expertise, skill sets, talents and viewpoints. All with one goal: To improve the quality of life in the greater Atlanta region.
